YOU KNOW WHO

Honestly prison for file sharing and shit doesn’t sound so bad now since we’re all going to be there together. It’ll basically be like living with all my epic Tumblr friends.

Also what if on our ugly orange jumpsuits we had our Tumblr url’s written instead of just numbers?

Think about it.

I’ve just found this under the video about ACTA and it made me think: is our society going to be like 1984’s (not exactly the same, though, I guess) if these laws are going to be accepted? ._.

Why yes, I did leave that comment on a youtube video.
I sincerely do believe that if ACTA (or PIPA or SOPA or any bill/documentation such as that) goes into effect, our society will slowly become like Oceania in Orwell’s novel 1984.

Alright, even if SOPA and PIPA do pass, it’ll take a while to go into effect.

This is also assuming Obama vetos it and Congress overrides it by having a two-thirds majority vote in both the House of Representatives and Senate, thus enacting the bill into law despite the president’s veto.

That being said… make shirts with your tumblr URL so we can all meet up sometime and talk about fandoms and shit.

Given the politics of everything going on right now, I decided an icon change was in order.

Things we will lose if SOPA passes:

  1. Tumblr
  2. Awesome internet friends
  3. Fan fiction
  4. Livestreaming television shows
  5. Access to new and old music
  6. Photos of our favorite celebrities
  7. Skills for graphic design and coding
  8. Pictures of cats being cute or funny
  9. Videos of cats being cute or funny
  10. Pictures of other adorable animals
  11. Roleplaying
  12. Fan fiction
  13. Awesome internet friends
  14. Fan fiction
  15. Gifs
  16. Fan fiction
  17. Photoshop tutorials
  18. Roleplay
  19. Fan fiction
  20. Texture packets
  21. PSD files
  22. Did I mention Fan Fiction?

Things we will gain if SOPA passes:

  1. A social life
  2. Maybe some productivity
  3. A revolution

Reblog if you have stuck with Tumblr until the very end.

I vote all of Tumblr challenges Congress to a game of dodgeball.

WINNER GETS TO DECIDE THE FATE OF THE BILL.

My letter in regards to SOPA to my state representative.

Representative Boehner,

I found out about the bill designed to censor the internet a mere nine hours ago and it still scares me to no end. I am, first and foremost, a writer. Ever since I started reading The Harry Potter series I have wanted to create something as beautiful with as much impact the J.K. Rowling gave the world.

This desire may not seem to hold much relevance to the bill at hand, but it does.

Second to being a writer, I am a roleplayer. What is roleplay, you might ask? It’s, in one word, an experience. I’ve been roleplaying for years now, as have a decent portion of the internet, and through roleplay I’ve learned how to develop characters, main plots and even subplots within a story that I collaborate on with multiple writers. It’s like writing a new story every day, getting to learn how to do something spectacular and different by opening up a new tab on your browser and researching something as simple as bowling. A close friend of mine that I’ve met through roleplaying can speak just about any language conversationally because she’s created characters from so many different backgrounds, walks of life, etc. etc. I can insult anyone in Shakespearean because I’ve written a character that is a great Shakespeare enthusiast. I can tell you about the social customs in other countries because I’ve participated in roleplays where the location of said roleplay is outside of the United States. I can tell you about social customs as far back as the Victorian Era in Europe because of roleplaying. These are things that I would have never learned by sitting down in my high school English or History classes. I’ve still learned vital things in both, but there’s only so much teachers can give to you in a forty minute window of time every day, five days a week - especially when they have papers to grade, tests to prepare their students for, exams to write, and oftentimes, families of their own to worry about and take care of.

In addition to expanding my knowledge, roleplaying has helped me form friendships with people halfway across the world. I have friends that live as close as Lima and as far away as Sweden and Serbia and even the Philippines. I can learn about their governments and their way of life from the people that live their themselves. I am able, through the internet, to form friendships with people that I otherwise would not be able to by simply stepping out of my house and going to a Starbucks. To quote J.K. Rowling, “although we may come from different places and speak in different tongues, our hearts beat as one.” I have friends on the internet that I can share my personal problems with that I know will not and will never judge me and that can oftentimes relate to me on the subject at hand. Such friends have also turned me towards novels, television programs, movies, music, and other media that I would have otherwise ignored without their assurance that yes, this is worth my time.

Skills that come with roleplay are not limited to the words that one types on their computer before hitting ‘send’. Oh, no. I’ve learned so much in the art of HTML coding and graphic arts that I would have never been able to do so skillfully if it weren’t for roleplay. In addition to this, roleplay requires advertisement and roleplaying websites are, in a sense, businesses. Roleplay has taught me essentials in marketing a product, making said product aesthetically pleasing to all and the content satisfying to your target audience. Such skills are going to stand out on a resume, I have no doubt about that.

Finally, the internet and roleplay is a place for me to take my frustrations out in a healthy manner. I used to be very suicidal. I would inflict pain on myself because I never thought I was good enough for anyone - teachers, parents, friends. I felt like I didn’t deserve the life that had been given to me and that I would be better off dead. I am better now, but from time to time I have days where I’m not feeling my best, and roleplay offers an escape. I pour any emotional anguish into my writing and I find that after churning out a few posts to whomever I’m roleplaying with, I feel much better. If all else fails, I can talk to a friend.

The internet censorship bill is going to take all of this away from me. I should stop saying me - the internet censorship bill is going to take all of this away from countless people. I don’t wish to come off as rude or condescending in my next words, so please take that into consideration as you read.

I’m sure you are aware that the first amendment to the constitution ensures every American citizen their basic rights - freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and the right to vote. This bill, if passed, is going to take away two of those freedoms from me - two freedoms I cannot afford to lose as a writer, especially in today’s society. While there are women being raped, innocent lives being slaughtered, war tearing the world apart and peaceful protests being raided, there is a bill sitting in Washington that will allow for censorship of the internet, a direct violation of the Constitution. America is becoming a police state, ruling over its people and throwing their rights out the window when it favors big name corporations or those working on Wallstreet. This is exactly what our founding fathers did not want for our country. This is exactly why they fought the Revolutionary War so valiantly, with pride in their mindset and freedom in their hearts. The fact that the government of today wants to change this sickens me to no end.

I live in America, first and foremost, because that is where my family lives. My great grandmother Jovita fled Mexico in the early twentieth century during the reign of Pancho Villa in order to live in a safer environment, where she didn’t have to worry about authorities breaking down her door in the middle of the night and killing her family. America is a place that so many people come to because we ensure them basic human rights that they won’t get anywhere else. If you have a dream and a dollar, you can make it happen in America. We are a land of opportunity, where you can literally be anything in the world you want to be.

I continue to live in America today because I feel safe here - or, at least, I did. Right now I’m wondering if I should save up enough money to buy a one-way plane ticket to Canada or Sweden or even Switzerland. I love this country so much, and I want to keep loving it with every fiber of my being until the day I die. Taking away my freedom of speech and freedom of the press is going to engender a copious amount of spite from me. I’m certain this is true for several others.

In closing, I want you to take this letter into heavy consideration. I like to think that because I am an American Citizen, my opinion still matters. I never intended my letter to be this long - I suppose this is because I have a lot of feelings on this subject, as I am very passionate about it. I understand that the government is trying to stop piracy, but why are you so eager to take away basic freedoms over something that isn’t nearly as horrible as the state of the economy, the unemployment rate, and the crime that goes on every day.

Sincerely,

[My Name]
